Quest for Bread

IMG_0017-243x325I love bread. Pretty much all bread. But, after working at NuVal for serveral months now, I’ve realized that not all store-bought breads are created equally. In fact, the scores for packaged bread are all over the place. The NuVal scores for bread range from 2 to 81 with a median score of approximately 26.

Here’s a brief explanation about the bread scores from the Meijer website:

Bread Scores vary with the content of whole grain, fiber, sugar, salt, and oil. Breads made from just whole grain flour, water, and yeast can earn very high Scores. Highly processed breads – those made from refined flours and with high additions of sugar, salt, and/or harmful fats – will score quite low. What is surprising is how different the NuVal Score can be from what is suggested by the name of a bread – i.e., “whole grain”, “whole wheat”, “multi grain”, etc. But that simply reveals that what a bread is called, and what it is made out of, may be two very different things.

Good to know, right? With this in mind, I’ve been on a quest to find a delicious and nutritious packaged, sliced bread that both my husband and I will enjoy. In the past few months, we’ve tried a few different varieties– some have been great, others not so much. Here are some of my favorites with their NuVal scores:

  • Food for Life Low Sodium Sprouted Grain Bread: 93
  • Alvarado Street Bakery’s Essential Flax Seed Bread: 56
  • Arnold Natural Flax & Fiber Bread: 48
  • Arnold Bread Grains & More Whole Wheat: 42
  • Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted 100% Whole Grain Bread: 42
  • Arnold 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins: 37
  • Nature’s Pride Double Fiber Bread: 31

What’s your favorite packaged bread?

  1. I’m amazed at the difference between Food For Life and Ezekiel’s breads: I always thought they were comparable products! It must be the sodium content…
Lately I have been buying Trader Joe’s sprouted grain bread, and Ezekiel’s knockoff :)

  4. I love Arnold’s and Pepperidge Farm’s Sandwich Thins. I’m hooked on them but I’m sort of surprised at the low score.
