3 Times Not to Go “Healthy”

Before I started working at NuVal, I always assumed that if a food was labeled “light” or “fat-free,” it was automatically good for me. But, I’ve learned that the “real thing” is often more nutritious. Here are a few times not to go “healthy” at the grocery store:

Instead of: Kraft Reduced Fat Sharp Cheddar Cheese (NuVal score: 19)

Have: Kraft Sharp Cheddar Cheese (NuVal score: 26)

kraft sharp cheddar

Instead of: Jif Reduced-Fat Creamy Peanut Butter (NuVal score: 7)

Have: Teddie Smooth UnSalted Peanut Butter (NuVal score: 49)

Instead of: Stonyfield Fat Free French Vanilla Yogurt (Nuval score: 39)

Have: Chobani Vanilla Greek yogurt (NuVal score: 73)

These are just a few examples of when seemly healthy foods may not be the most nutritious option, but this is not always the case. For the most accurate scores, be sure to check the NuVal scores at your local grocery store or on the NuVal website or blogs.

  2. I’m all for the real deal when it comes to peanut butter. It tastes so much better than the kind with oils and sugars(though a pinch of salt never hurts)

  3. I love NuVal and was thrilled that my neighborhood grocery store, Big Y, now has NuVal scores! There was a huge poster in the entrance when I ran in yesterday. It is so much easier to shop with NuVal doing all the research! And as for peanut butter, Teddie costs much less than Jiff, too.
