Bars, Bars, Bars

I love bars, like Larabars, KIND bars, and ZBars, but instead of eating them as a snack, I typically enjoy them as dessert. For some reason, they don’t satisfy me the same way some other snacks do, like almonds (NuVal score: 81) or a banana (NuVal score: 91) with Teddie Smooth UnSalted Peanut Butter (Nuval score: 49). But, as you know, life gets crazy and these bars can really save the day, especially when traveling or running around all day without a free minute to eat a healthy meal. It’s nice to know that I have a bar in my bag to quell my hunger pains!

My favorite bar is Larabar’s Peanut Butter Cookie (NuVal score: 31). I have a major peanut butter addiction, so this bar satisfies that craving as well as my sweet tooth. It’s the perfect way to end a meal for me! :)

When it comes to bars, a 31 on the NuVal scale is pretty good. The scores for these bars (and granola bars) range from 2-57 and the median score is a 19. So, a Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar scores better than “average.” I’m always looking for ways to trade-up the nutrition of the foods that I eat, so I checked out how some of my other favorite bars scored on the NuVal scale:

  5. Larabars are definitely my weakness. I love their chocolate coconut cashew before a long work out. They definitely keep my energy up and help hold off any cravings until I can make breakfast or dinner.

  6. I love dry cereal :) I try to pick a healthy one, put it in a baggie, maybe mix in some fresh fruit, and throw it in my purse. Instant greatness whenever I need it!

  9. I’m a big bar fan too, especially Larabars! :) I love that there are no weird, artificial ingredients in them. My fav flavors are the PB cookie and the coconut cream pie. They taste like dessert, they’re so good!

  11. Yogurt with an apple or banana and some almond/peanut butter. That combo always fills me up! Sometimes I’ll skip the fruit and crumble a granola bar on top…or have it all if I’m really hungry. This would be perfect for me :)

  12. I love Larabars but they are not easy to come by in my neck of the woods. The others I haven’t tried but would love to. My favorite go to snack (don’t know if it’s a snack) is a green smoothie.

  13. Oh geez! I hae so many favorite snacks its hard to say. But I would have to say my absolute favorite is Luna Bars Cookies n Cream version (just because Im an oreo addict and the luna version is healthier than the reg. cookies ;D)

  15. Larabars are my snack on the go lately (I’ve been loving the pb&j one but will check out the pb cookie one since I am also a pb lover). Where do you buys your locally? The cheapest I can find is Whole Foods for $1.29 a bar. Did you hear that REI is featuring three flavors of Larabar on sale this month..cherry pie, apple pie and pb&j for only 99 cents each and free s&h if you pick up in one of their stores? I’m always looking for a deal on these things so I was thrilled to see that.

  30. I do love Larabars, especially the key lime and lemon ones. I keep some in my purse and eat 1/2 of a bar if I am hungry and on the go. Other snacks that I carry with me are almonds, apples, and dried fruit!

  38. Zbars are my favorite! I know they’re made to be marketed to children, but I’ll pretend any day with those bad boys. One of my favorite satisfying snacks would be hummus and pita chips. So good and so filling! (:

  40. My snacking is always really unconventional; a slice of bread w/ peanut butter, an apple, or just a handful of walnuts. But I guess my favourite would be a piece of fruit. Apples are my favourite! Nuval score: 96! :D

  50. I love larabars, luna bars and cliff Zbars. My favorite right now is the cliff Zbar honey graham. They are so portable and sooo good and filling. I always have some type of bar on on me at all times.

  106. I just started making my own granola bars. I can make a batch on the weekends and have them all week to go. This saves me money from constantly buying my same bars and I can switch up what I put in them every week. This week I made some with cashews, almonds, peanuts, cranberries and raisins.

  123. I turn to Luna bars when I feel myself getting hungry in between meals (the lemon zest flavor has a special place in my heart!). You’ll also find a little baggie of Multigrain Cheerios in my bag at all times, usually accompanied with an ArcherFarms brand real fruit strip (they’re from Target, organic, delicious, and go on sale all the time — What more could you want?!)

  126. Thanks so much for the opportunity! I love to make up my own trail mixes and put them in little containers! I just throw a bunch of nuts and seeds together(that I buy from the bulk bins) and add raisins! To make it extra satisfying I’ll add chocolate chunks or cereal!

  127. I bought a a smoothie container that has an ice stick down the middle to keep your smoothies cold. now I can blend one up and take it on the go for a high protein, satisfying snack! I also like fruit (both fresh and dried), bars, and light string cheese as good on the go snacks.

  128. I’ve been experimenting with my own bar recipe using chickpea flour to pack it with protein! But larabars are always my stand-by, I bring them with me on trips when I don’t have my meals planned out so I don’t get super hungry.

  165. When I’m on the go, I like carrot (99) and celery (96) sticks and rye crackers (not sure of the score, but one of the brands I like ranges from 43 to 87 depending on the variety so I think these are fairly good). They don’t leave my hands sticky the way fresh fruit does.

  181. I’m a huge fan of bars, too. Especially when I’m going away overnight they’re the perfect way to ensure I have some vegan food I can eat.
    I also love carrot sticks. They satisfy my need for crunch (so I feel like I’m eating something) while the fiber and water content hold me over wonderfully until I can get a real meal.

My favorite go-to mini meal is bars such as Lara bar (Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, Tropical) and Mrs. Mays nut bar or a smoothie such as a Starbucks Strawberry Banana Vivano or Jamba Juice Mango Madness. I love working in fruits and veggies to mini meals, and these options let me do that- plus tie me over until my next meal on the run.

  199. My favorite on-the-go snack is definitely trail mix. I like a couple of pre-packaged combinations but I prefer to make my own! Not only does it taste good, it’s so easy to put together and keeps me full for hours while I travel. My mix usually contains an assortment of nuts, dried fruits, a little bit of cereal or granola, and chocolate chips (I have a major sweet tooth and can’t resist the sweet ‘n’ savory combo!)

  220. The bodega right around the corner from my office in NYC carries some Lara Bars (I actually just finished the peanut butter cookie one before seeing this post!) My favorites are apple pie and peanut butter so far; they are very difficult to find. I am planning on bringing them with me traveling to Europe in a couple weeks as a healthy snack to keep up on the go. Otherwise favorite snack is a handful of almonds.

  261. Since I have to eat every 2 hours, I’ve come up with lotsa quick-but-yummy snacks. I loooove Artisana coconut butter, eat lots of it. Mix a big spoon of it with chocolate rice protein and a bit of almond milk, and ya’ got instant (healthy!) chocolate-fudge icing :) I usually glob it on a coupla Ryvita or Kavli crackers, and then drizzle it with some raw honey. Almond milk on the side, yum!

    I also love bananas — endless ideas with those — that generally include chocolate rice protein, lol

    Oh, I also recently tried my first Larabar. Cherry Pie. Oh-muh-gawd-good :)

  321. One of my go-tos is a steamed egg in a mug. Just beat a raw egg, few shreds of cheese, and splash of milk in the bottom of a mug and microwave for ~45 seconds. Now its your own personal omelet, that can easily be brought on the road in a to-go mug.

    When I want something sweeter: Vanilla Almond Luna. Amazing!
