Shop, Trade, Save: Week of May 2

It was my turn to do the shopping this week, so my husband sent me with a decent-size grocery list of what he wanted, including “3 or 4 bags of chips.” (My husband has a serious chip problem!) I ended up buying him 3 bags of chips, plus one bag of pita chips. I figured at least the pita chips were a nutritious option. But, boy, was I wrong!

Check out these NuVal scores:

  • Kettle Backyard BBQ chips (NuVal score: 24)
  • Kettle Sour Cream, Onion, & Chive chips (NuVal score: 20)
  • Wise BBQ potato chips (NuVal score: 5)
  • NY Style Garlic Pita Chips (NuVal score: 3)

The pita chips scored the lowest– by far! I was definitely surprised! But, I was happy to see that the Kettle Backyard BBQ chips scored at the top of the list. They’re my absolute favorite! ;)

Here’s this week’s cart:

Trade

I usually buy Teddie Super Chunky Peanut Butter (NuVal score: 38), but this week, I traded up for Teddie Unsalted Old Fashioned Natural Peanut Butter (NuVal score: 49). My husband is really picky about his peanut butter. I wonder if he’ll even notice?

Save

Instead of buying a Boboli Original Pizza Crust (NuVal score: 5), I saved more than a $1 purchasing the store-brand pizza dough from the prepared foods department. Plus, isn’t rolling out the dough the best part about making homemade pizza?

  1. that is surprising about the pita chips! i’m curious about soy crips, they are my fave! do you know how they score http://www.glennys.com/products/soy-crisps-chips.html

  2. I occasionally buy refrigerated whole wheat dough from Trader Joe’s – it’s only $1, and Boboli is more like $3 around here. I like rolling it out, too!

  3. So sad about pita chips! I wonder how homemade pita chips would rank? I know a lot of store bought ones have additives, unnecessary add ons (but let’s be honest, that is part of what makes them good), etc., but homemade pita chips are rather simple.

I agree, BBQ chips rock my world!

  7. If you like rolling out the dough so much, can you please share some pointers? When I try to roll out dough, it scrunches back together again and doesn’t cook through!

  9. That is surprising about the pita chips! I’d love it is Nuval scores were in the pacific NW to make those quick chip decisions… And others of course.

  11. Wow, I’d never think that! Only 3??? Wow… I guess that’s really what NuVal is all about, education! I’ll be checking up before grocery-shopping from now on. Thanks!

  12. Good to know pita chips are low. I wish I didn’t have a Terra chip addiction – though I justify it by saying they are veggies, right? I’ve never seen the homemade pizza dough, will have to look for it – whole wheat at that!

  13. Out of curiousity where does naan bread rate on the NuVal system? My husband really enjoys when I make our homemade pizza on these. We each get one “bread” out of the package and can put on our own toppings.
Also great to know about the chips my husband is like yours and has a chip/dip addiction. What brand and flavor out of ALL the chips that NuVal has rated has the highest score?
Thanks and think both of your blogs are fantastic.

  14. I would have to say rolling pizza dough is actually the worst part of making a homemade pizza. Any tips? I usually end up wanting to throw something out of frustration.
