Taming the Coupon Chaos

Coupons, coupons, coupons! I have a love/hate relationship with them. Of course, they save me lots of money at the grocery store, but keep tracking of them can be hard work, especially since my coupons are always a disorganized mess!

I used to keep my coupons in my wallet, but my collection got totally out-of-control. I’d open my wallet and they’d spill out all over the place. And, they’d fall everywhere– all over the floor, under things, and in hard-to-reach places– so, not surprisingly, random people would stop and help me pick them up. The whole situation was awkward and embarrassing.  I definitely needed a new method!

My more recent method for keeping track of my coupons was storing them in a small basket. Every time I got a new coupon, I’d just toss it into the basket. Simple, right?

IMG_0017

This worked well until I needed to go to the grocery store. Carrying a small wicker basket around the store was just not an option! Soon, I resorted to a regular ol’ paper envelope for storing and transporting my coupons.

An envelope was a great option until I realized that my larger store coupons didn’t fit in it. I tried folding them, but they still took up too much space.

IMG_0020

The other day, I finally decided to get myself organized. I purchased a coupon-sized expanding file. (Office Depot has some really cute ones!) Now, I store all of my coupons in a lightweight plastic file.

IMG_0028

I organized the sections of the file according to how my local grocery store is set up, so I can easily grab coupons as I walk through the aisles. For instance, the produce/deli/cheese coupons are in the first compartment while the ones for frozen foods and bread are in the very last one.

Nice and neat! :)

I love my new coupon expanding file so much, I’ve decided to give one away on Trading Up Downtown this morning! I also threw in a NuVal t-shirt. ;)

  1. I love that organizer!

Make sure that you go through your pantry and fridge to see if you already have an item that you think you need before going to the grocery store! I have 3 bottles of dried mint because I didn’t do this!

  2. My favorite money saving tip is using coupons on things that are already on sale- most of the time you get things for free!

  4. That organizer is awesome, SO many compartments! My tip is to always make a list, that way you are likely to come home with items you actually need and can both create some actual meals and stick to your budget. I always plan meals before making my list too.

  5. This is an awesome post- I really need an organizer like this. I was just searching through for a coupon this morning in my purse and of course not finding it…haha oh boy!
I have two money saving tips #1- buy bulk items like oatmeal when they are on sale, and #2- try to make less frequent trips to the grocery store and make due with what you have, it will force you to use up things you’ve already spent money on (I need to take my own advice on the second one!)

  8. I actually purchased a cute little accordian-style coupon file from Barnes & Noble. It’s part of their Vera Bradley collection and comes with a notepad to write the grocery list and a pencil. Love it!

My front door is metal, so I have a magnetic basket on it for store coupons. Since I typically make a special trip to use store coupons, I just keep them there until I need them and then I throw them in my purse. The Vera Bradley coupon holder is for groceries and is small enough to stay in my purse, which is helpful when I need to make a quick run to the store because I ran out of something.

  10. Turning off appliances doesn’t always mean they aren’t taking in electricity. Unplug or turn the wall switch off (if you can) for TVs, chargers, Stereos, Toasters, etc. The phantom power can really add up.

I dropped my electric bill from $25 to $5 one month making sure I did that. Note: I live in a studio apartment and the stove & heat are gas-powered.

It not only saves money but forces me to be creative :)

  12. My tip is to know your grocery store’s coupon policy. Mine doubles coupons up to $0.50, will let you use a store and manufacturer’s coupon on the same item and accepts competitor’s coupons. Knowing this has saved me a bunch of money!

  13. Sweet, sweet giveaway!!! I am a huge coupon clipper :-) . My advice is to check out coupons.com regularly as they have some good coupons you can just print. Also, comparison shop. One grocery store may have cheaper cereal, while another may have cheaper produce. Check it out!!

  14. I wish I was more of a coupon clipper…but I end up throwing away the worn out clippings that end up stuffed at the bottom of my purse!!

My best tip is to make a list and prioritize it! Fruit and veggies are super important to me, and at the top of my list, and granola bars and certain cereals are not as important, so if I have to save a little money I have to pass on some my least important items!

I don’t have any amazing money savings tips (I’m in graduate school and graduating in a little over a month…so it’s more of an “OMG I have to save money on EVERYTHING what can I do without?!?!” kind of thing) BUT, I love finding coupons for things that I know I have to buy, because my mom and grandma always told me that I shouldn’t just buy something because I found a coupon and it’s a good deal, I should buy it because I need it!

  20. My best money-saving tip is to ALWAYS take the time to compare prices at the food store. Even with a coupon for a name-brand product, a lot of times the generic or store brand is still cheaper. And always know your grocery store’s coupon-doubling policy.

  27. Lately when we go shopping I try to match coupons to the sales ad. Plus, I like to make sure I have a few coupons for things we might like to try or buy regularly (even if they aren’t on sale).

Currently I use a little photo album to store my coupons. I need a new one as the one I’m using has seen better days (and doesn’t hold enough coupons!). But, I love it because I can easily flip through it and see all of the coupons!

  28. Oh my goodness I really need that coupon organizer! My envelopes are falling apart, plus it takes forever to sort through. My husband and I keep a Google document for our budget. We have a certain amount allocated for each necessity, bills, pets, cars, insurance etc as well as a column for income. It keeps an adding tab of money spent on food, gas, and our personal spending. It really helps to know how much we have left each month to spend or avoid overspending.

  35. I heart coupons! My husband used to be a little weirded out by my overflowing coupon drawer, but after several delicious bogo free meals, he’s always asking what good coupons I have when we’re going to eat out :) I think one good money saving tip in regards to coupons is that just because you have the coupon, doesn’t mean you need to buy the product. I used to buy things just because I had a coupon for it, thinking I was saving money, but often I didn’t really need the “new fancy windex” or the “ultra deodorant.” Use coupons for what you would normally buy, and keep the other coupons just in case.

Money saving tip – try and only do your major grocery haul, every two weeks instead of every week. Plan out 10 meals for those two weeks (leftovers and maybe eating out can be used for the extra days). This will save you money. It forces you to use “what you have”, become creative in the kitchen, and not stop at the store everynight for something!
