In honor of National Nutrition Month, I have decided to hold a recipe contest on Trading Up Downtown. But, not just any ol’ recipe contest– one that requires you to “trade-up” at least two ingredients in it.
The recipe can be anything that you want– from baked goods to casseroles to microwave meals– anything goes. Just make sure to “trade-up” at least two ingredients. To give you an idea, my recent Pizza Dip post is a good example of “trading-up” a few ingredients to make a recipe more nutritious.
Rules:
- All recipes must include at least two (2) ingredients that have been “traded-up”
- Recipes must include the NuVal score for all of the “traded-up” ingredients. (If you don’t have access to NuVal scores, just drop me an email with the items for which you need scores, and I will get them to you ASAP.)
- All recipes must be received by Wednesday, March 31, 2010
- Email your recipe submission to thaupert@nuval.com
- Recipes will be judged on creativity and overall nutrition
Prize:
The winner will receive a NuVal prize pack, which will include:
- NuVal t-shirt
- Real Simple’s Best Recipes: Easy, Delicious Meals
- A couple of high-scoring food products, including a jar of Teddie Unsalted Old Fashioned Natural Peanut Butter (NuVal score: 49) and a product of the winner’s choice.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Happy cooking!

Hi Tina,
Is this contest open to Canadians? I also have a question about the NuVal calculations. . .it seems that “low fat” foods are higher than higher-fat but unprocessed, “real” foods (like the cream cheese example). Is this the case? Thanks!
I love recipes contests!! Count me in. I just need to get thinking and cooking now…
How cool! I will totally be entering this. Now.. just need to get my creative juices flowing…
@Ricki:Yep! The contest is open to Canadians! I forwarded your question onto our RD to be answered in a post on 3/10.

Hey there, I was reading your article and I just wanted to say thank you for putting out such excellent content. There is so much nonsense on the internet these days its difficult to find anything worthwhile. I actually have cooked this recipe before, I got this book last month on recommendation from a friend http://ninjahq.com/go/cookingrecipes and it turned out really nice! I’m very eager to try your variation of it though, it looks fantastic. I think you might enjoy those recipes, they’re very good. Thanks for the article and great ideas.
This is certainly one of the best sources of information I have stumbled across on this subject. Have you looked into the other side of the argument of natural health? Personally, I think a solid case could be made either way, but let me know if you know of more sites on the Internet to verify what you are discussing.
