Even though my refrigerator was totally empty, this week’s trip to the grocery store ended up being relatively small. I made it a point to meal plan and check the food situation in my kitchen before leaving the house.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love to eat old-fashioned oats for breakfast, but every once in awhile, I like to switch things up. This week, I traded up my Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats (NuVal score: 57) for Hodgson Mills Bulgur Wheat Hot Cereal with Soy (NuVal score: 93).

I really wanted to buy my favorite variety of apple, which are Jazz, but they were $1.99 per pound. The Gala apples were on sale for $1.69 per pound, so I opted for the cheaper option. Gala apples are a great alternative to my beloved Jazz apples and they are just as nutritious. Both varieties scores a 96 on the NuVal scale.

Fresh fruit is my favorite healthy snack. It’s quick, easy, and highly portable. Recently I’ve been on a HUGE pear kick. I think I’ve eaten more pears in the past two months than I have in the past two years!
I also love bananas (score 91!), but I’m so picky about their ripeness level I generally eat them in things (oatmeal and green monsters) rather than on their own.
Congrats!!! Please email me at thaupert@nuval.com with your full name and mailing address.

I really need to try different hot cereals…i’ve never had bulgar but it sounds great!
I bought that Bulgur Wheat cereal once on impulse and loved it. But I haven’t found it in the stores since then. I’ve been craving it and now that I know how high it scores, I may have to ramp up my search for it (or buy it online!).
I’ve had bulgur in my cabinet for a lonnnnng time. I should look into a recipe or probably through it away because it’s so old. Hmm. Anyway, you’ve inspired me to possibly (possibly!) stray from my everyday old-fashioned oats.
I really like that you post your grocery trips. I’m traveling right now, so buying the minimum at the grocery store, but food shopping is one of my favorite activities back home. You’re definitely teaching me new things!
Why is it that you never seem to have any meat in your cart?
