Trading Up Downtown

I remember the first time I heard about Nuval. I thought, Nuval? What’s that? When I realized it was a nutritional scoring system that can help you in the grocery store, I was psyched! Who couldn’t use some help in the grocery store? I know I can! There are way too many options, especially when it comes to items like bread, snacks and even organic selections.

But wait a second… I haven’t seen this in any stores near me. Is it even in any stores near me?! Well I went over to nuval.com and discovered it’s not. My Nuval dreams were over! Or were they? It turns out Nuval has a great website where they list some of their scores, as well as other great info like how scores are calculated, etc.

So for the past few weeks when I sat down to write up my grocery list for the week, I pulled up Nuval’s website. It’s really user friendly and definitely helps me make better decisions. Here are a few awesome trade-ups I’ve made in the past few weeks:

• Instead of… Tostitos Light Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips Made With Olestra (NuVal score: 28)
  I traded up with… Garden of Eatin’ Blue Chips All Natural Tortilla Chips (NuVal score: 40)

• Instead of… Barilla Angel Hair Pasta (NuVal score: 61)
  I traded up with… Barilla Plus Angel Hair Pasta (NuVal score: 91)

• Instead of… Ground Sirloin (NuVal score: 30)
  I traded up with… Ground Turkey (NuVal scoer: 33)

Nuval doesn’t have scores for everything just yet, but here’s a few items I decided to purchase just based on their scores:

• Fresh Broccoli (NuVal score: 100)
• Sweet Potato (NuVal scoer: 96)
• Shrimp (NuVal score: 75)
• Bananas (NuVal score: 91)
• Kashi TLC Snack Crackers (Nuval score: 30)

As you can tell, you can’t go wrong with fresh fruits and vegetables. But knowing these scores can be really helpful especially when it comes to snacks, like Kashi Crackers! Don’t see the scores you need? Or want to get notified of the latest scores?  Sign up and become a site member!
