How Does My Breakfast Score?

Yummy breakfast this morning! :D

I had a big ol’ creamy bowl of oatmeal with soy milk and banana mixed in. Delish!

Here’s what was in the mix:

  • Quaker Old-Fashion Oatmeal
  • Silk Light Plain Soy Milk
  • Banana

So, here’s where it gets fun! If you can guess the 3 NuVal scores for the ingredients in my oatmeal, you can win a wonderful tea + chocolate prize pack!

The tea is a box of the famous and hard-to-find Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride and the chocolate is a bar of Scharffen Berger Dark as well as a big bar of Chocolove Extra Strong Dark 77% Cocoa (aka the good stuff! ;) ).

You’re welcome to use the NuVal website to find the scores as well as Trading Up Downtown and A Better Bag of Groceries. (Of course, if you have access to a store with NuVal scores, you can find the scores there, too.) I believe that all of the scores can be found somewhere on one of the three sites, but if you cannot find one, make your best educated guess!

If more than one person guesses all 3 scores correctly, I’ll randomly pick a winner from the bunch.

    In the process of this fun little search, I discovered that the Quaker website itself does not promote the old fashioned, make your own oats. When you click on products, it only shows the instant versions, which I have known for years are less healthy than the old fashioned, even before NuVal was around to tell us that!

    I was surprised to learn that the oatmeal scored the lowest. I know it’s still a nutritional powerhouse, but I thought it would rank higher!

    Tina, I have a question – I see you’re always drinking soy milk instead of regular milk. How do you get your calcium? I always use regular milk with my oats, because I’m worried that I’m not getting enough calcium otherwise. But the NuVal score for regular milk is pretty low…

  32. @Anna: I get calcium from other sources– yogurt, cheese, and a daily supplement. The NuVal score for non-fat and 1% milk is really high!
