I have always been conscious about what foods I put into my body. But, ever since I started working at NuVal, I’ve started to pay even more attention to the nutritiousness of my food, especially those that are seemly “healthy.” One of the most interesting (and surprising) categories for me has been yogurt.
I’ve always considered yogurt to be one of those widely accepted health foods. I mean, some brands and flavors are better than others, but, in general, I thought yogurt was a good, nutritious choice. But, I soon realized that there is a huge amount of variety in the yogurt category. In fact, the Nuval scores for yogurt range from 14 β 99.
For years, my go-to brand of yogurt has been Stonyfield. My favorite flavors are non-fat Plain, Blueberry, Peach, and French Vanilla, and most of them score fairly high on the NuVal scale– 89, 65, 57,and 39 respectively. However, working at NuVal, I’m always looking for ways to “trade-up” my favorite products for a more nutritious option.
In comes Greek yogurt!
Greek yogurt is a nutritional superstar! It’s packed with protein, low in calories and sugar, has zero fat, and meets part of your daily calcium requirements. Not too shabby.
Chobani’s Non-Fat Plain Greek yogurt scores a whopping 94 on the NuVal scale! The Chobani flavors score pretty high too– Vanilla gets a 73 and a Blueberry receives a 63. I still enjoy Stonyfield yogurt, but now I make a conscious effort to buy Greek yogurt whenever I can. Who can resist thick, creamy, and satisfying Greek yogurt? With the help of the NuVal scores, choosing Greek yogurt was an easy decision. But when my husband and I moved to an apartment closer to the city, our new grocery store didn’t carry Greek yogurt at all!
Ahhh! What to do now?
Luckily, living in a city offers the convenience of easily assessable public transportation and a number of nearby grocery stores that carry my beloved Greek yogurt. Now, once or twice a month, I ride the T into downtown Boston to purchase my Greek yogurt. I actually don’t mind making the extra effort because I enjoy exploring various parts of the city. I usually end up running other errands and perusing my favorite shops while in town. And, of course, making a special trip downtown to “trade-up” my yogurt selection is good for my health.

I love Greek yogurt- for the protein count and texture more than anything. Good to know it rates so highly!
Congratulations on the New Blog… I will be adding this blog to my list of daily reads!!
I love Greek yogurt, and food blogs definitely turned me on to it! I particularly love the Chobani Pineapple flavor – seriously the best stuff ever! Congrats on the new blog – I’m looking forward to all of the tips!
Oh how I love Greek yogurt! Plain Chobani Greek Yogurt scores high and I would assume plain Oikos by Stonyfield Farms would, too. I’ll have to check it out the next time I hit Hy-Vee.
Literally just the other day, I was wondering what the big fuss was about Greek yogurt. Thanks for the info! Next time I’m at the store, I’m going to try it out!
Liking the new blog! : )
LOVE the new blog Tina!!! And what a great article. Greek yogurt is definitely a favorite in my household. Love both Chobani and Oikos. I usually go for whichever is on sale, but Josh prefers Chobani over Oikos. Are the scores better for either of the two brands?
Congrats to the new blog and thanks for the info! Feeling even better about the extra cents I spend on greek over regular yogurt!
I am excited for your new blog. I really really like this nuval thing and want to learn much more about it. I grew up eating greek yogurt because my father’s side of the family is greek so I didn’t know the difference between greek yogurt and regular. When I was introduced to regular yogurt I went straight back to my greek roots. Greek yogurt is so thick and creamy. I eat Trader Joe’s greek yogurt because the price value is way better than the more expensive known brands. I feel Trader Joe’s does a great job with their yogurt though.
Oh, man, I am OBSESSED with Greek yogurt! I’m a huge fan of plain, nonfat Greek yogurt with some sweetener mixed in. When the grocery budget is tight, I buy some plain, nonfat Stoneyfield Farm yogurt and mix some in.
I love Greek yogurt!!! I would eat it 24/7 if I could. I too buy the TJ’s brand since it is much cheaper.
Loving the new blog!!
Love the new blog Tina!! Yogurt is one of my favorite warm-weather breakfasts, but with the colder weather, I need a hot breakfast. I love love love Oikos, but the Trader Joes is such a great sub.
Hi Tina, is there a link to the NuVal scores for yogurt? I tried to find them on the webpage, but didn’t have any luck. Thanks!
Love your new NuVal blog, great info. and perfect for your lifestyle/career right now!
Glad Chobani is the highest scoring, it’s definetely my favorite!
I love your new blog. It has such a cool and funky design! I’ll definitely follow it. NuVal sounds like such a great idea, shame we don’t have it here in the UK. Maybe one day…
@Erica: I would also like to know how Oikos scores, because that’s the type of Greek yogurt that I buy.
Another informative and fun blog to follow! It looks great so far, Tina.
@Erica: We haven’t scored Oikos yet, but I will let you know as soon as we do!
NuVal is a great concept, I’m having fun clicking around. I will be sharing this with my family! Like Allison W, I was wondering about a link. I tried searching the term “yogurt” on NuVal but a lot of links lead to “Page not found.” Do I have to become a member?
@Allison W.: No, sorry. Nuval doesn’t have yogurt scores on their website. Do you live near a HyVee, PriceChopper, or Meijer by any chance?
Love the new blog!
Yay! Great new blog, Tina. As an RD, I can’t wait to learn more about Nuval.
congrats on the new blog!
I think Nuval’s concept is really good – sort of like the points to Weight Watchers but taking into account a lot more like the nutrients and how filling it is… Very smart!
About greek yogurt, it is very hard to find in Canada and I wonder why – is there any sort of ingredient in it that’s ‘controversial’ or wouldn’t be allowed here? Just wondered if you knew something about it, I am very curious about it as it is everywhere in the american blogosphere (and scoring so high @ NuVal
Congrats on the new site Tina! Love it!
